Requirements:
Two (2) papers of 5-6 pages, a midterm, a final, weekly response papers, class presentations, and active participation.  Upon prior arrangement, students may choose to write one longer research paper (12 pages) rather than two shorter ones.

Grading:
 •Active participation: 10%
Includes intelligent contributions to class discussion, regular attendance, and short class presentations: See "attendance policy" below.
 •Weekly response papers: 15%
1-page papers due each week on Tuesday in class
•Two papers-- both 5-6 pages (or one longer one): 50%
If I detect substantial improvement in your writing, I will weight your later paper grade more heavily.  See the "style sheet" on the course web page if you have questions about grammar, paper format, proper citation, etc.
•Midterm: 10%
•Final exam: 15%

Attendance policy:
Prompt and regular attendance is required. You are allowed up to two absences for reasons of illness, family/ work emergencies, etc: Consider this your ‘sick leave.’  Any additional absences will substantially lower your participation grade.  If you know that you must miss class, call or email me ahead of time.  It is your responsibility to contact the instructor about missed assignments or late work.

A note about reading:
As this is a graduate-level course, the amount of reading required is fairly substantial -- 300 or more pages a week -- plus excerpts from selected historical and critical texts, ranging anywhere from 5 to 20 additional pages.  Plan to budget your time so that you can set aside a few evenings to do the reading.  Readings which I have labeled "suggested" are entirely optional.

Incompletes will only be allowed in the case of documented medical emergencies.

Students with disabilities should contact the instructor during the first week of class about any arrangements they may require.
